Full course description

The self-paced course will consist of previously recorded lectures covering basics on strawberry physiology and production practices in greenhouses. Students will be given two weeks to complete all six lectures, followed by a live 2-hour discussion session with instructors on May 12th, 2023. You will continue to have access to the course materials until May 31st, 2023. The course is most suitable for those who are new in controlled environment agriculture and interested in strawberry production under protected cultivation conditions.

Delivery method (100% online) 

The course will be delivered 100% online using Scarlet Canvas as the platform. In addition, a Zoom online live meeting will be scheduled for online live discussion (schedule based on participants time zone). Access to high-speed internet is required. 


Lecture Contents: 

A typical course module contains video lectures captured during the instructors’ previous Strawberry School taught in 2021. In addition, there will be a copy of the PowerPoint slides. Each course module will have a set of quizzes to complete and a discussion forum in which students can post questions prior to discussion meeting and comments to interact with the instructor as well as the other students. 


Course topics (self-paced, in any order as students like) 

Lecture 1: Introduction to greenhouse strawberry production and cultivars (30 min) by Chieri Kubota 

Lecture 2: Transplants and basic flowering response (30 min) by Chieri Kubota 

Lecture 3: Planting date and ending date to schedule (30 min) by Chieri Kubota 

Lecture 4: Nutrient solutions and substrates (30 min) by Mark Kroggel 

Lecture 5: Environmental conditions and benchmark yields (30 min) by Chieri Kubota 

Lecture 6: IPM basics (30 min) by Mark Kroggel 


Live Discussion Meeting: two hour QA and discussion with Chieri Kubota and Mark Kroggel (multiple sessions will be scheduled on May 12th Friday to accommodate time zones).


Course access will end on May 31st, 2023.
