Weather, Climate, and Climate Change for Ohio’s Environmental and Natural Resources Professionals and Volunteers

Full course description
This online self-paced course will help you increase your knowledge, skills, and capacity to integrate Ohio relevant weather and climate topics in both public and professional environmental education and outreach. The course is divided into four one-hour learning modules including an introduction to Ohio’s weather and climate; bringing weather and climate science to your community; impacts of climate change in Ohio; and community science and effective communication practices.
Course Goals
By the end of this non-credit Extension course, you will be able to:
- Define weather and climate and the differences between them and identify a few ways that each affect society and the natural world;
- Understand Ohio’s unique location and how it affects our weather and climate;
- Explain how geography, weather patterns, and global climate zones are all connected;
- Recognize both natural and human made climate change and the differences between them;
- Describe the primary impacts of climate change in Ohio and how they influence phenology, natural resources, and society; and
- Incorporate weather and climate awareness into your volunteer and/or professional education and outreach efforts.
Course Format
This online course will take approximately 4 hours to complete and includes our weather and climate chapter, short videos, try this activities, quizzes, and one final homework assignment. Resources and activities for you to try and use in your non-formal and formal education efforts to help your audiences build their climate and weather awareness are included.
Enrollment closes after February 18th, 2025. Participants can work through course modules independently and at their own pace between February 18th and March 28th, 2025.
Participants will also have the opportunity to attend a course kickoff with instructors via Zoom on February 18th. Details about the Zoom session will be included in the course.
